What is Doxycycline Hyclate side effects?
Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston 77550.
As part of a study investigating new methods of detecting adverse drug reactions, adult outpatients receiving new prescriptions for 1 of 4 antibiotics (doxycycline, penicillin VK, ampicillin, or tetracycline) were assigned to 1 of 2 methods of monitoring adverse drug reactions. Data were collected from a total of 457 staff-initiated interviews and from 1467 patients who were asked to telephone to report possible adverse effects. Doxycycline is considered by authoritative sources to be generally comparable in side effectss to other tetracyclines and penicillins, with the exception that it increases photosensitivity. Results from both monitoring methods consistently indicated at least a 3-fold higher frequency of nausea or vomiting with doxycycline relative to the other antibiotics.
Complaints of skin rash also were at least 4 times more frequent with doxycycline, depending on the particular sample.
tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to doxycycline, minocycline, tetracycline, sulfites (for doxycycline syrup only), or any other drugs.
tell your doctor and pharmacist what prescription and nonprescription medications you are taking, especially antacids, anticoagulants (blood thinners) such as warfarin (Coumadin), barbiturates, carbamazepine (Tegretol), penicillin, phenytoin (Dilantin), and vitamins. Doxycycline decreases the effectiveness of some oral contraceptives; another form of birth control should be used while taking this drug.
be aware that antacids, calcium supplements, iron products, and laxatives containing magnesium interfere with doxycycline, making it less effective. Take doxycycline 1 hour before or 2 hours after antacids (including sodium bicarbonate), calcium supplements, and laxatives containing magnesium.
Take doxycycline 2 hours before or doxycycline side effects after iron preparations and vitamin products that contain iron.
tell your doctor if you have or have ever had diabetes or kidney or liver disease.
tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while taking doxycycline, call your doctor immediately. Doxycycline can harm the fetus.
plan to avoid unnecessary or prolonged exposure to sunlight and to wear protective clothing, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Doxycycline may make your skin sensitive to sunlight.
you should know that when doxycycline is used during pregnancy or in babies or children up to age 8, it can cause the teeth to become permanently stained. Doxycycline should not be used in children under age 8 except for inhalational anthrax or if your doctor decides it is needed.
What should I do if I forget a dose?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it.
However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

In deciding to use a medicine, the risks of taking the medicine must be weighed against the good it will do. If a person is exposed to anthrax, the risk of side effectss caused by doxycycline treatment may be acceptable because of the seriousness of the disease. However, if a person has not been exposed to anthrax, these risks may outweigh the benefits.
Some other things to consider:
Doxycycline and other members of the tetracycline class of antibiotics are not generally approved for treating patients under 8 years old.
These antibiotics can cause swelling of the brain and a condition called bulging fontanels (soft spot on head) in infants.
Tetracycline antibiotics are associated with permanent tooth discoloration in children. If used for long periods, they may also slow down the growth of teeth and bones in babies born prematurely. However due to the seriousness of anthrax, dosing instructions for treating inhaled anthrax (post-exposure) is provided in approved prescribing information for doxycycline.
Before taking any tetracycline antibiotic, review with your health care provider ALL medicines you are taking, including those you take without a prescription. Tetracycline antibiotics can affect how other medicines work and other medicines can affect how the antibiotic works.
Some medicines that can interact with doxycycline are antacids and doxycycline side effects that contain calcium, iron, magnesium, or sodium bicarbonate. If you take doxycycline side effects containing these minerals within 2 hours of the time you take doxycycline, these medicines could decrease the doxycycline's effectiveness.
Birth control pills also may not work as well if you are taking doxycycline. Use other forms of birth control while you are taking this medicine.
Throw away any unused doxycycline when it is out of date or when it is no longer needed. Do not take any doxycycline after the expiration date printed on the bottle.

How does it work?
This medicine contains the active ingredient doxycycline, which belongs to a group of antibiotics called the tetracyclines. It is an antibiotic that has the ability to inhibit the growth of a wide variety of bacteria and certain other organisms. It works by preventing bacteria from producing proteins that are essential to them. Without these proteins the bacteria cannot grow, replicate and increase in numbers. Doxycycline therefore stops the spread of the infection and the remaining bacteria eventually die.
Doxycycline is used to treat a wide variety of respiratory, urinary tract, eye and sexually transmitted infections, and various other infections caused by susceptible bacteria and micro-organisms.
It is also used for severe acne, as it is active against the bacteria associated with acne, Propionebacterium acnes. This is a common type of bacteria that feeds on sebum produced by the sebaceous glands in the skin. It produces waste products and fatty acids that irritate the sebaceous glands, making them inflamed and causing spots.
By controlling doxycycline side effects numbers, doxycycline brings the inflammation of the sebaceous glands under control, and the skin is allowed to heal.
Doxycycline is also active against the parasite that causes malaria. It is sometimes used to treat malaria, and can also be used to prevent it when visiting high-risk malarial areas, in particular areas where the malaria parasite is resistant to chloroquine.

- iron preparations
- zinc salts.
In addition, doxycycline reduces the absorption of iron preparations taken by mouth.
